MAIDEN
DASHES
for two-year-olds, at distances of five-and-one-half furlongs or less.
FORM:
Regular, fast
workouts, with two or more at high speed, preferably at four furlongs
or longer.
DISTANCE-SPEED:
If raced, has
run at a distance within at least one-half furlong of today's while
earning a speed rating of eighty-seven or better.
HANDICAPPERS
PREFER:
1. The horse that
has run the exact distance the fastest
2. The horse that has run a distance shorter by one-half
furlong the fastest while gaining rapidly and
impressively in the stretch.
3. First-starters bred for high speed, provided the horse
is strongly supported in the wagering.
REGULAR
ELIMINATIONS:
1. Experienced
horses that have not earned speed ratings
of eighty-seven or better.
2. First-starters not bred for high early speed.
3. Horses that have run green or rank, particularly at the
gate or on the turns.
EXTRA
ADDED ATTRACTIONS:
1. A high dosage
index
2. A leading stable, or one whose record with
two-year-olds has been outstanding.
3. Alertness, poise, and calm manner in the paddock and
post parade.
4. A leading rider or a favorable jockey change.
5. Had gate problems, from sharp stable, puts blinkers
on. 6. Late tote action.
SPECIAL
CONDITIONS:
At five-and-one-half
furlongs, when no horse promises high early speed, prefer:
1. Horses that
finished fastest at five furlongs, provided
they finished within two lengths of the winner and
earned a speed rating of eighty-five or better.
2. First-starters from barns that excel with juveniles and
having impressive workouts at six furlongs.
