CLASSIFIED ALLOWANCES

Three-year-olds and up, highly restricted.

FORM:

Has raced within thirty days, at least two workouts since; if a previous stakes winner and has not raced since the specified date, must show a pattern of eight to twelve regular workouts, with at least three at distances of five furlongs or farther in acceptable times.

DISTANCE:

Has won at exact or related distances in satisfactory time.

HANDICAPPERS PREFER:

1. Horses of improving form and moving from less restricted to more restricted classified conditions; that is, from conditions permitting more than one recent victory to conditions permitting only a single recent win; from a higher specified winner's share to a lower specified amount, from a shorter specified time interval to a longer time interval.
2. Nonclaiming horses whose recent records fall barely within the boundaries of today's classified conditions: that is, just within the permissible number of wins, specified winner's share, and specified time interval.
3. Lower grade and other open stakes winners returning from lengthy layoffs and recording the kind of workout pattern described in the above requirements of FORM, provided the distance and footing are nicely suitable and nothing about the probable pace figures to nullify any basic class and form advantages.

IN THE ABSENCE OF THE ABOVE, PREFER:

4. Consistent (two wins in last six attempts) higher- priced claiming horses perfectly suited to the distance, footing, and probable early pace.

REGULAR ELIMINATIONS:

1. Better stakes horses entered for conditioning or for preparation for richer purses and better stakes.
2. Nonclaiming horses that combine questionable current form with any disadvantages related to distance, footing, pace, jockey and post position.
3. Horses that have run regularly since the specified date without winning while competing for purses comparable to today's.
4. Inconsistent claiming horses moving up.

EXTRA ADDED ATTRACTIONS:

1. Peaking form, well suited to the distance, footing, and probable pace.
2. Improved recent form, drop in class from nonclaiming race having a purse better than today's.
3. Nicely bred, improving three-year-old of late summer or fall moving from win under nonwinners twice allowances to highly restricted classified allowances open to older horses.
4. Won for better purse just prior to specified date, sparkling workout pattern and one recent satisfactory race.
5. Drop from even effort in stakes last out, switch to one of top three jockeys in the standings.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
DURING FALL, PREFER:

1. Three-year-olds that started in midsummer or later and have moved through preliminary nonwinners allowance conditions impressively.
2. Four-year-olds that have competed regularly in nonclaiming races and are now returning from layoffs that began just prior to the specified date.

ON TURF, PREFER:

1. Younger, lightly raced horses that have recently won successive nonwinners allowance races and are bred for turf.
2. Previous turf race winners of higher purses than today's.
