STAKES AND HANDICAPS

Lower Grade open stakes, for three year olds.


FORM:

Has raced within six weeks, sharp regular workouts since, including two at five furlongs or farther in quick time: in latest effort did not race rank or green.

DISTANCE:

Has won at exact or related distance: if moving from sprint to route, must have won at shorter distance with evident reserves of speed and power, must be favored today by probable early pace.

HANDICAPPERS PREFER:

1. A previous winner or close runner-up in an open listed Stakes.
2. A nicely bred, lightly raced, impressively improving horse that has won at least two nonwinners allowance races, and powerfully, such that it might be among the best in the division.
3. Horses that during the three-year-old season have won any stake previously, even the conditioned kind, easily or powerfully.
4. Any horse that has won successive nonwinners allowance races in improving time and manner.

REGULAR ELIMINATIONS:

1. Horses that at any time have been entered to be claimed.
2. Horses that have not yet won two allowance races.
3. Horses that have won a conditioned stakes but since have lost badly in open or graded stakes.
4. Any horse that has engaged in three or more successive driving finishes within weeks under allowance and stakes conditions, unless it won all the races.

EXTRA ADDED ATTRACTIONS:

1. Won a stakes race last out.
2. Royal breeding, still improving.
3. Dramatically changed form, resulting in unexpected big win last out.
4. Fastest finish at distance, notably if done in less than twenty-four seconds.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

At distance of mile and one-quarter and farther, prefer:
1. Horses that have looked most powerful in the stretch at middle distances.
2. Horses having dosage indexes of 4.0 and below.
3. Horses whose breeding suggests greater stamina at long distances.
4. Horses from leading stables. handled by leading trainers.

ON TURF, PREFER:

1. Previous big winners on grass.
2. Multiple allowance winners on dirt, bred for turf.
